Chapter 19

If You Build It, We Will Go

We secured the Mark V and headed for the workshop. To my horror, Kenny threw up a hand and started talking—or whatever he does when sounds come out of his mouth.

I grabbed Earl’s arm. “I have to warn you. That’s Kenny LePine. He’s completely insane and doesn’t speak anything resembling English, but just do your best to listen for the parts you can understand.”

“Hey! Der you be, you. Who you got der wich you dis time? Is dis here be da box you been wantin’, you?”

Suddenly, I was even more terrified since I’d understood almost everything he said. “Hey, Kenny. It’s good to see you. This is Earl. She’s going to do some work on the Conex for us.”

He shot a concerned look down at his right hand and yanked a rag from his back pocket. With vigor like I’d never seen from him, he wiped his hand with the rag until the first layer of skin had to have fallen off. With wide eyes and a grin the size of New Orleans, he yanked the cap from his head with his left hand and stuck the well-rubbed right hand toward my mechanic. “Hello der, Miss Earl. I don’ be knowin’ nobody bein’ a girl and dem be name Earl, me. How you do? An’ don’ be shamed to not be takin’ my grubby hand, no. Ain’t no fine woman like you don’ need be touchin’ no grungy, grimy hand like mine, no.”

Earl smiled as if Robert Redford were flirting with her, and she slapped Kenny’s hand away. “I ain’t no hand-shakin’ kine woman, no, not me. I be da huggin’ kine, and you be dus’ da kina man I do love huggin’ on da most, me.”

Sometimes, when you find just the right spot behind a dog’s ear, scratching it will make him thump his foot against the ground and roll his eyes back in his head. That’s exactly the response Kenny had to Earl’s hug, and I thought I’d been transported into some sort of Cajun Twilight Zone. Who knew Earl from the End was bilingual?

When Earl finally pulled away, Kenny took a knee in front of her, and I thought he was on the verge of pulling out an engagement ring. Thankfully, though, he wiped his brow with the rag and let out a long sigh. “Whoo-eee, it done been a long time since ol’ Kenny been hugged like dat, me. You sho be one fine huggin’ kina woman, you.”

The two talked, flirted, and apparently formed some sort of connection of souls. It was as if nothing else in the world existed while their incomprehensible gibberish persisted. I was frightened to break it up, so Clark and I joined Hunter in the workshop inspecting what would become our home away from home in the new future.

Hunter motioned toward Earl and Kenny. “It looks like you’ll have to spray those two with a water hose to get them apart. What’s that about?”

“I don’t know,” I said, “but I don’t want to get any of it on me.
